I took the liberty of making a few changes to the code and now it works, sort of :/ As long as you do not type /odometer (alone) in chat you will not get a lua error.

/odometer reset
/odometer hide
/odometer show

All work fine and the plugin does keep count of the distance traveled best I can tell.

*ARF is the creator, I think it better he mod the code to work 100% (my lua skills are limited to copy, paste and delete). If / when that happens I will make note here.
