Feedback on your piece:
To write in I-form is hard, but also fun. You have to remember to flesh out what you see and do. And also, what you THINK others see and do, if they have a bearing on the story.
Don't be afraid to digress. You write at some point about the various controls, and that worked but had some small errors. However, bringing the surreal parts into your story, is a great way of making the reader smile and want to know more (I am thinking of the Honking of Horn, etc.)
You try to put a lot of effort into portraying your character, and kudos for that. It is, after all, the most important person alive (and he knows that). So, he needs to be 3d, and show development/quirks/style. But, for a first chapter, you cannot expect much more than a presentation.
Keep it up, only way of becoming Iain Banks, is by writing lots!
